Artists in the Lakeside Area
Last week we posted the last town in the lakeside area, that we will visit, JOCOTEPEC, so I decided to write today, about the artists of the area. The Lakeside area is an important Art Center, there are many artists in the different towns. But how did this come to be? Let me tell you the story.
In December of 1941, Neill James a famous and reknowed autor of note, who was included in the International Who’s Who of intellectuals from Cambridge, England and a world traveler came to Ajijic, due to an accident she had on the slopes of the volcano Paricutin in Michoacan, badly injured she was brought to the town for recuperation. She fell in love with Mexico and it’s people and settled here.
She became a great benefactress of the area, and founded an Art School for children to paint, and after seeing the potential of some of the children who took classes there, she sent them to
study art in San Miguel de Allende. They are now some of the great artists we have in Ajijic. Who also paint murals around the town.
Nowadays we also have many expats who have lived here for many years and are great artists as well. Thus Ajijic become a multicultural art center. There are probably more that 100 artists and it would be impossible to mention them all.
Víctor Romero
Born in Ajijic, Jalisco,Mexico . He started painting when he was 8 years old and professionally since 45 years ago, his paintings are usually depicting mexican scenes and the town of Ajijic, his media is oil. He also teaches to a large number of students. Which has helped for more students to become artists.
Isela Martinez
She was born in Ajijic, Jalisco, México. She is Victor’s Romero wife and Victor was her teacher, she has been painting since 25 years ago, she is a prolific artist and paints, not only mexican scenes, but also birds, flowers etc. she is also a very good teacher to a large number of students. Her media is oil.
Efren Gonzalez
He was born in Ajijic, Jalisco, México. He started painting since he was eight years old, in the art school of Neill James and painting profesionally since 20 years ago. He masters several medias, such as oil, pastel, water colors, acrylics, paper mache, carbon Paint and clay.
What he feels about Mexico is expressed in his paintings. The everyday life of his town. The lights, the joy, the energy and the colors of Mexico, are his main themes. He considers his paintings mexican impressionism. His aim is to say more with less strokes, using a rusty red background that gives instant contrast to the painting, because of the amount of light he uses.
ISIDRO XILONZOCHITL CAMARENA “XILOTL”
He is a plastic artist, who evoques the magic of the realism that surrounds him. Magic realism has not died and it is neither a literary or artistic movement. His work is as original as the artist himself. He continues studying and continues bearing fruits in his work, he transports the viewer to a new palpable world, where dreams come true.
He studied with a private teacher, who launched him to the plastic arts school in Guadalajara. He explores and cultivates different disciplines, such as sculpture and two-dimensional art, using a mixed media oil with acrylics.
Cathy Chalvignac
Born in France. Established in Mexico since 35 years ago. She is a photo realistic artist and her main topic are the natives and ethnics groups around the world. She paints them because she admires them and she honors them this way. In Ajijic she found the magic surroundings to be able to express her art. She has been in Ajijic since 25 years ago.
Antonio Lopez Vega
Born in Ajijic, Jalisco Mexico. He was one of the artists who went to San Miguel de Allende to study Plastic Arts, through the Neill James sponsorship. The ancient Mexican civilizations have always captivated and inspired his road through art. Mexicans by nature seek the roots that give them their identity. In ajijic there is a lot of history and traditions to rescue and that is what he expresses in his art.
Jesús Lopez Vega
He was born in Ajijc, Jalisco, Mexico. He started painting at a very young age. He masters various painting techniques and sculpture. The co-existence of the indigenous communities, the folkfloric traditions of the mexican people has been the legacy of his rich source of inspiration shaping his mystic magic realism . He is a restless investigator of the history and ancestry of the likeside towns.
Judy Eager
She was born in Denmark and went to Canada in 1950, after living in Ontario and British Columbia, She came to Mexico, 45 years ago. She owned the Old Posada and built The New Posada 30 years ago. She studied painting with Victor Romero 30 years ago and has been painting since then. Her media is Oil. She signs her painting as JYTTE her Danish name.
Enrique and Belva Velazquez
The artistic work of two artists, who met and fell in love in Ajijic, the Lakeside village which is the focus of many of their paintings which are found today in their art studio/gallery in Ajijic.
Enrique Velázquez is a native of Gudalajara and Belva McIrvin de Velazquez is a happily transplanted Coloradoan. They capture in their watercolors the life in the quaint cobbled streets the quiet villages that so many North Americans have learned to love.
LOS ARTISTAS DEL ALREDEDOR DEL LAGO DE CHAPALA
La semana pasada posteamos el último pueblo que visitamos del área del lago de Chapala, JOCOTEPEC, así que decidí escribir hoy, acerca de los artistas del área. El área del lago es un importante Centro de las Artes, hay muchos artistas en diferentes pueblos.
¿Pero cómo sucedió esto? Déjenme contarles la historia .
En Diciembre de 1941, Neill James una famosa y renombrada escritora, quien fue incluída en el “quien es quien” de los intelectuales de Cambridge, Inglaterra, y una trotamundos, vino a Ajijic,
debido a un accidente que le ocurrió en las laderas del volcán Paricutín en Michoacan; gravemente herida, fué traída a este pueblo para su recuperación. Se enamoró de México y de su gente y se
estableció aquí . Fue una benefactora del área y fundadora de la escuela de arte para niños, y cuando veía el potencial de algunos de los niños que tomaban clases ahí, los mandaba a estudiar arte en San Miguel de Allende a las escuela de Artes Plásticas.
Ahora son algunos de los grandes artistas de Ajijic. Quienes también pintan murales.
Hoy en día hay muchos extranjeros que han vivido aquí por muchos años y muchos artistas muy buenos, convirtiendo a Ajijic en un Centro multicultural de arte. Es probable que haya más de 100 artistas y sería imposible mencionar a todos.
VÍCTOR ROMERO
Nacido en Ajijic, Jalisco, México. El empezó a pintar desde los 8 años y profesionalmente desde hacer 45 años. Sus pinturas usualmente retratan escenas mexicanas y al pueblo de Ajijic, en óleo.
El es maestro de muchos estudiantes, lo cual ha ayudado a que mas estudiantes se conviertan en artistas.
ISELA MARTINEZ
Nacida en Ajijic, Jalisco, México. Ella es esposa de Víctor Romero, y fue el quien le enseño a pintar desde hace 25 años, es una artista prolífica y pinta escenas mexicanas, pájaros, flores, etc. Pinta al oleo. También es maestra de muchos estudiantes.
EFREN GONZALEZ
Nació en Ajijic, Jalisco, México. Empezó a pintar a los 8 años en la escuela de arte de Neill James y pinta profesionalmente desde hace 20 años. Trabaja en óleo, acuarela, pastel, acrílico, carbón, papel maché y barro. Su pintura ha sido la manera de expresar lo que siente y piensa de México. La vida cotidiana del lugar en donde vive. Las luces, la alegría la energía, los colores de México son su tema principal al pintar.
Considera que su arte es impresionismo mexicano. Expresa la idea que quiere trasmitir más con menos pinceladas, utilizando un fondo en tono rojo óxido que le permite instantáneamente obtener contrastes efectivos a la pintura, debido a la cantidad de luces que utiliza
ISIDRO XILONZOCHITL CAMARENA “XILOTL”
Artista plástico, cuyo arte evoca la magia que se revela al realismo que lo rodea. El realismo mágico no ha muerto y tampoco ha quedado como una tendencia literaria y artística del pasado. La obra de Xilotl es tan original como el artista mismo. Se sigue cultivando y continúa dando frutos, transportando al espectador a un mundo nuevo y palpable, donde los sueños se
hacen realidad.
Estudió con una artista particular, quien lo lanzó a estudiar a la escuela de artes plásticas en la ciudad de Guadalajara. Ha explorado y cultivado casi todas las disciplinas, destacando principalmente en la escultura y el arte bidimensional., como la técnica mixta, el óleo, y la pintura acrílica entre otras.
CATHY CHALVIGNAC
Nacida en Francia, y radicada en México desde hace 35 años. Es pintora foto realista y su tema principal son los indígenas del mundo, y los pinta por su admiración hacia ellos y para honrarlos. En Ajijic encontró su lugar mágico hace 25 años.
ANTONIO LOPEZ VEGA
Nació en Ajijic, Jalisco, México. El fue uno de los artistas que fue a San Miguel de Allende a Estudiar Artes Plásticas con la beca de Neil James. Las antiguas civilizaciones mexicanas lo han cautivado e inspirado a lo largo de su camino en el arte. El mexicano por naturaleza busca las raíces que le dan identidad.
En Ajijic hay mucha historia y tradición por rescatar y eso es lo que expresa en su arte.
JESÚS LOPEZ VEGA
Nació en Ajijic, Jalisco, México. Empezó a pintar a una temprana edad. Domina varias técnicas gráficas y escultóricas. La convivencia con las comunidades indígenas y tradiciones folklóricas de los pueblos mexicanos le han legado una rica y variada fuente de inspiración, plasmando misticismo y realismo mágico. Es un incansable investigador de la historia y antepasados de los pueblos de la Ribera de Chapala.
JUDY EAGER
Nació en Dinamarca y se fue a vivir a Canadá en 1950. Después de vivir en Ontario y la Columbia Británica, vino a México hace 45 años. Fue dueña de la Vieja Posada y después construyó la Nueva Posada hace 30 años. Estudió pintura con Victor Romero hace 30 años y ha estado pintando desde entonces. Pinta en óleo. Firma sus cuadros como JYTTE su nombre en Danés.
ENRIQUE Y BELVA VELAZQUEZ
El trabajo de dos artistas que se conocieron y amaron en Ajijic, pueblito enclavado en la Ribera del Lago de Chapala, es el enfoque principal de muchos de sus trabajos de arte que se encuentran en su estudio galería en Ajijic.
Enrique nació en Guadalajara, Jalisco, México y su esposa Belva Mc Irvin de Velázquez, trasplantada del Estado de Colorado, Estados Unidos, capturan en sus acuarelas, las calles empedradas y el encanto de la vida tranquila de los pueblos que tantos americanos han aprendido a amar.
