Period Of Anarchy

FROM THE INDEPENDENCE OF MEXICO TO THE CONSOLIDATION OF THE REPUBLIC 2

PERIOD OF ANARCHY, AND THE NORTH AMERICAN INVASION

By 1830 Mexico was in real crisis; two factions were fighting for power, the Yorkies and the Scottish, federalists and centralists or liberals, and conservatives; this caused permanent political chaos.

Elections were not respected and, rebellions were the best way to access power. In the first three decades of Independent life in Mexico, there were more than 30 presidents and three constitutions, the one in 1824, which we mentioned, the one in 1836 and 1843. Each government would spend all the money supporting the army and all their energy defending themselves from their enemies. With the continuous wars, many mines closed, agriculture and commerce deteriorated and, the industry did not grow.

From the time that Mexico obtained its Independence, the United States tried to buy Texas. The Mexican government refused to sell part of its territory, still, in 1820, many American settlers had established themselves in Texas led by Stephen Austin. They were privately seeking their Independence from Mexico and becoming part of the United States.

The immigration from the United States of more and more settlers, the smuggling of weapons, slaves coming to work in the lands was more than enough reason to think that the United States was intruding on Mexican soil.
