Typical Dances Of Mexico

FOLKLORIC BALLET

The cultural patrimony of Mexico is, without a doubt, one of the essential attractions of the country; its history, gastronomy, and traditions form part of the Mexican culture. Typical dances are the most vital element of its identity, due to its history and the mix of colorful and joyous customs.

The typical Mexican dances seem to be endless; some have become a symbol of the country
around the world. I will mention a selection of these beautiful traditions.

THE JARABE TAPATIO

This dance is Mexico’s national dance; it has all the elements that allow the viewer to identify the country of origin; the mariachi, a man dressed as a “charro” and a woman dressed as the “China Poblana” this dance was born at the end of the XIX century in Jalisco.

A mix of regional dances gave the origin to this dance. The word “tapatío” alludes to the stomping men do when going around the women as a way of courtship, and the women wave their colorful skirts, deciding if they accept the romance.
This dance is a cultural characteristic of Mexico known around the world.

DANCE OF THE CONCHEROS (SEASHELLS)

This dance was from the beginning of the Conquest of Mexico. Its origins were from the indigenous people who needed to keep their traditions alive. As they play some Spanish instruments and pay tribute to some religious figures, the dance has a Spanish influence.

Their attire preserves traditional garments with feathers (the original feathers were from pheasants) and seashells.

The dance has two moments: wakefulness, which represents the energy of the night, the jaguar, mother earth, and femininity, and the other moment honors the day, the eagle, the solar energy, and masculinity.
This dance has strong spiritual content. It is vital to keep harmony with the cosmos with offerings, respect, and a healing and pure intention.

LOS PARACHICOS (the meaning was “for the boy” “para chico” )

This dance was declared Inmaterial Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by the UNESCO. This festivity occurs in Chiapa de Corzo in Chiapas in Jan. from the 8th to the 22nd. There is a legend to its origin. The story goes that a woman during the colonial period went to the town to find a cure for her sick son, and she saw a group of “Chiapacorceños” (men from Chiapa de Corzo)
Who dressed up to go and play their instruments to the boy to make him happy. The boy was so delighted that he got cured.
Nowadays, the dancers go around the town with their colorful and elaborate dresses, a hat made of hemp, and a wooden mask, dressed with “sarapes” shawls and bright ribbons, playing their flutes, drums, and rattles made of tin.
Every day there is a different celebration but, on the last day they pray to the Christ of Esquipulas, (a Christ from the town) Saint Anthony and Saint Sebastian.

DANCE OF THE DEER

As its name indicates, this dance is typical from the State of Sonora in the deer’s honor, a venerated animal hunted by indigenous people, the Yaquis and the Mayos. It is considered a dance preserved with its original prehispanic ritual. The instruments used are a water drum, rattles, and a flute. The headdress is the deer horns.
The dancer has to be very agile, have perfect health, and mental and spiritual preparation. To perform this dance, they have to start practicing at a very young age.

BAILES TIPICOS DE MEXICO

BALLET FOLKLORICO

tributo a personajes religiosos.
