THESHOUT OF DOLORES

This is the day, when Mexicans celebrate the Independence of Mexico from Spain, even though it still took 16 more years to expel the last spanish group from the last bastion in Veracruz, to consider that Mexico really became independent from Spain.

By 1810, there had been 11 years of unrest in all the Mexican Territory, the Spanish had been 300 years dominating the country and never improving the conditions of poverty and suffering of the indigenous people and at the same time they had been sacking the country.

There were several conspirations, among which Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla a catholic priest, Don Miguel Dominguez and Doña Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez, his wife, Juan Aldama, and Ignacio Allende, both spanish captains, had planned to initiate the insurrection in December, but being discovered, they started it in September and Don Miguel Hidalgo (the priest) rang the bell in the church of Dolores, (now Dolores, Hidalgo, Guanajuato) to summon all the population, then he gave the “grito” between the 15th and 16th of September urging the population to fight for liberty, and expel the vice- royal authorities from Spain. We consider this moment to be the start of the process of Independence.

( Please read the posts Prelude to the War of Independence and the Independence of Mexico in previous posts, under the section of history of Loving Mexico)

WHEN DID THIS CELEBRATION START?

In 1813, José María Morelos y Pavón, another priest who continued with the insurrection , when Hidalgo was executed, wrote a manuscript named “The feelings of the Nation” where he gave an outline to write the constitution, and he also made the proposal to solemnize the 16 of September as the Anniversary of the Independence.

By 1840, the “Grito” was celebrated in the Alameda Central in Mexico City, Years after in 1896, Don Porfirio Diaz, President of Mexico for 30 years, ordered to take the bell from Dolores, Hidalgo to the National Palace in Mexico City, in 1900, was the 90eth anniversary of the Independence, Porifirio Diaz rang the bell there, gave the shout and since then, it is celebrated at the National Palace.

However every single city, town and even Embassies and Consulates around the world celebrate this important event on the 16th of September.

HOW DO WE MEXICANS CELEBRATE?

Food is very important, different dishes are prepared, pozole, tostadas, etc, trying to garnish the food, with the colors of the flag (Green, white and red), whistles are blown, flags are waved, most of the times, there are mariachis, fire works and people dress-up in typical mexican clothes , it is a joyeuse day for mexicans, an another opportunity to get together with friends and family and show our pride of being Mexicans.

I would also like to mentioned an important fact, There are many versions of what Hidalgo said, he is supposed to have said “Viva la América” “Abajo el mal gobierno” (down with the bad government) Viva Fernando VII) “Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe” (however we are not 100% sure that, that is what he said) .

At that time, the name the country had, was La Nueva España and not Mexico, until 1824 when the country was given the name of ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS, we became Mexico.

Nowadays when the President, the Governors, the Municipal Presidents, the embassadors or the Consuls, give the shout, they give it, with their personal touch. They normally say “Mexicanos” “Viva la Independencia” “Viva los Héroes de la Independencia” and “viva México “ three times, he waves the flag and the national Anthem is sang.

In 2019, the President mentioned 20 different Vivas.

In a Personal note, I have had the opportunity to be at several celebrations of the Mexican Indepedence in Los Angeles , Calif. and in Toronto, Ont. making us yearn our beautiful country, the family and friends we left behind, and making us feel very proud of being Mexican.

VIVA MEXICO !!!

My personal comments:

VIVA MEXICO ¡!!!
