The Legend of Quetzalcoatl
Who was Quetzalcoatl? He was a powerful God of Mesoamerica.
His name is of Nahuatl origin meaning “Quetzal, bird of beautiful plumaje and Coatl meaning snake” Feathered snake.
When the Gods finished creating the world, they lived in peace and harmony with the humans, but this happiness was not shared by Quetzalcoatl, who believed that men should not be at the service of the Gods, because he believed that men should be free to choose their own destiny.
To solve this problem, God Quetzalcoatl, decided to travel the world, he adopted the human form and started walking until he arrived in Tollan, where they were offering a sacrifice to his brother Tezcatlipoca, furious seeing the scene he stopped the execution. He told them that while he was among them, they would never need anything and did not need to make human sacrifices.
Quetzalcoatl taught humans how to work gold, jade, and obsidian to dye cotton, to cultivate corn and other foods, he also taught them astronomy, but the prosperity that Tollan was experiencing was broken very soon, because his brother Tezcatlipoca was angry at him, and found the way to finish with Quetzalcoatl.
Tezcatlipoca disguised as an old man took him a present and Quetzalcoatl received it very happy and humble, when he saw that it was a “maguey” with an exquisite drink, but he did not know that it was “pulque”, he also offered him a dish based with human meat.
When he realized what he had eaten and drank, he was ashamed, so he went to the sea and built a boat made with snakes, then he told the people not to follow Tezcatlipoca’s teachings, because he was a bloodthirsty and cruel god. He also told them, that he would return in one year.
Unfortunately the year they were expecting him to come back, coincided with the Spanish conquest in 1519, and that is why they thought that Cortes was Quetzalcoatl, whom they were expecting.
Without doubt Quetzalcoatl is one of the most emblematic and representative Gods of the Mesoamerican mythology. His teachings got to different civilizations, Teotihuacans, Miztecos, Toltecs, Mayans and Aztecs, among others.
Quetzalcoatl was an exceptional politician and ruler.

*Pulque, is a fermented Mexican beverage which origin is Pre-Hispanic, made of the sap of the maguey. It is very strong and it hits your head.
*The Mayas adored Kulkulcan, which is the same God as Quetzalcoatl, just different name.
The Legend of Quetzalcoatl
Quién fue Quetzalcoatl? Fue un Dios poderoso de la antigua Mesoamérica.
Su nombre es de origen Náhuatl y se compone de los vocablos, “Quetzal” ave de hermoso plumaje, “Coatl” que significa serpiente, interpretado como serpiente emplumada.
Una vez que los dioses terminaron de crear el mundo, tanto ellos como los mortales vivieron en paz y armonía, pero esta felicidad no era compartida por Quetzalcoatl, quien creía que los hombres no debían estar al servicio de los dioses, sino que debían de ser libres de elegir su propio destino.
Para solucionar este problema. El Dios Quetzalcoatl, decidió viajar por el mundo, adoptó una forma humana y comenzó a caminar hasta llegar a Tollán. Allí se estaba ofreciendo un sacrifico humano en honor a su hermano Tezcatlipoca, enfurecido detuvo la ejecución y les dijo que mientras el estuviera con ellos nada les faltaría.
Quetzalcoatl, les enseñó a los humanos como trabajar el oro, el jade, la obsidiana, a teñir el algodón, a cultivar el maíz y otros alimentos, además les enseño como entender la astronomía.
Pero la prosperidad de Tollán no tardo en romperse. Su propio hermano busco la forma de acabar con el, disfrazado de anciano le llevo un regalo, este lo recibió con gran gusto y humildad, al ver que se trataba de un maguey con un liquido exquisito, sin embargo Quetzalcoatl no sabía que era “pulque”*, después, le ofreció un guiso a base de carne humana.
Avergonzado por lo que hizo, se dirigió al mar, construyó una barca hecha con serpientes.
A sus seguidores les comentó que volvería en un año y les pidió que no siguieran las enseñanzas de Tezcatlipoca, por ser un dios cruel y sanguinario.
Tristemente el año que esperaban que regresara, coincidió con la conquista española en 1519, es por eso que creyeron que Cortes era Quetzalcoatl.
Sin duda alguna, Quetzalcoatl es una de las deidades más representativas y emblemáticas de la mitología prehispánica. Sus enseñanzas llegaron a diferentes civilizaciones. Mixtecos, teotihuacanos, toltecas, mayas y aztecas, entre otras.
El gran Quetzalcoatl, fue un gobernante y político ejemplar.
